Traditions
In a world where change is the only constant, it is comforting to have a place that feels familiar. We enjoy the traditional format of protestant worship. We love our pipe organ, especially as it accompanies us in singing hymns. We strive to continue the fellowship and community centered life of Midwestern Protestant churches. Like all churches, we have learned to be flexible to meet the actual needs of our current world, but we always honor the traditions that we inherit.
But we do not worship tradition. We celebrate the traditions that feed us, and let go of ones that no longer fit our contemporary lives. We mix our traditional tendencies with the best of our contemporary culture, creating events and services that are authentic expressions of the gathered community. Because we welcome members with a wide variety of experiences and beliefs our church programs are varied expressions of who we are within the framework of traditional Protestantism.
We are proud to be a part of the United Church of Christ, whose tradition is continually seeking to unite with other Christians, while simultaneously welcoming into the full life and leadership of our denomination those others leave out. We are a gospel-centered church. The narratives of faith handed down to us in the bible are the guiding principles by which we live, but we do not worship the book. We understand the bible to be an attempt by people to express their ineffable experience of God and we are open to wisdom that comes both from biblical study and from other sources of inspiration.
We celebrate our Christianity by worshipping together on Sunday mornings, serving in our community, and extending a radically inclusive welcome to all who wish to know and experience God. We enjoy helping people craft rituals that are authentic representations of who they are and especially love hosting weddings and memorials. It is a special privilege to walk alongside your family during these important traditions.
